Using a unique combination of poetry, drama, music, song and images Golden Fables 2012 presents answers to these questions… and asks more of its own as it re-imagines Lincolnshire’s rural life for the 21st century.
Powerful words from Archbishop Desmond Tutu are brought together with specially-written stories inspired by the harsh realities of life in Lincolnshire’s countryside and its myths and legends by leading poet and broadcaster Ian McMillan, National Poet of Wales Gillian Clarke, Scotland’s Poet Laureate Liz Lochhead and Lincolnshire Poet Laureate Joel Stickley.
Their modern Fables have been fused with exciting original music from international composers Gabriel Prokofiev, Tim Dalling and Luke Carver Goss.
Performances of Golden Fables 2012, at the SO Festival in Lincolnshire and at Latitude in Suffolk in July 2012, will see a choir bring the writers’ and musicians’ creativity to life as the works are sung a capella before a backdrop of images by awarding-winning graphic novelist Kate Brown and archive film of Lincolnshire.
Actors Rebecca D’Souza and Des Coleman, a narrative written by Ian McMillan and original instrumental pieces will link the elements of these intriguing stories from Lincolnshire together on stage.
This innovative blend of poetry, music, drama, song and images is directed by Susannah Tresilian.
Golden Fables 2012 was commissioned for the Cultural Olympiad by Lincoln-based cultural solutions UK. In addition to the live performances it will be filmed and shown in arts centres and rural halls across Lincolnshire in July 2012.
Golden Fables 2012 has been funded by Legacy Trust UK, creating a lasting impact from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games by funding ideas and local talent to inspire creativity across the UK. Other funders are Arts Council England, the European Regional Development Fund and Lincolnshire County Council.
